In every professional journey, the people who cross our path often leave a lasting mark—mentors who inspire, colleagues who challenge us, and friends who support us. As Ceddric LaBoard, Lead Tech Manager based in Atlanta, looks back at the last 25 years with AT&T, he decided to reconnect with those invaluable leaders that have helped shape his career.
Seeing his potential
Ceddric started with AT&T in December 1998 as a Logistics and Supply Tech under his first manager, Russell McCracken. Known as a young, hardworking visionary with high expectations, Russell had a talent for spotting “hidden gems” and providing tailored opportunities. His trust in new team members like Ceddric helped them succeed quickly; with timely coaching, Ceddric was able to manage the support desk and trouble queue solo while still supporting his team. This early lesson in empowering others through trust and guidance shaped Ceddric’s own leadership style and approach to developing potential.
“That set the tone for me as a future leader, to not just look at the obvious, but see the potential on your team.”
As Ceddric progressed in his career at AT&T, there were several other key influencers that made an impact in one way or another.
Growing his potential
Competition and collaboration
“Every day was a competition to see who could do it better, who would get the next opportunity first.”
Early in his career, Ceddric met Shon Hendricks. Shon was a mix of mentor, competitor, and eventually friend. Through their friendly contest, they inspired each other to be better than they were the day before and fostered innovation and growth within the team. Since that point on, Ceddric seeks out top talent or fast risers to compete with, maintaining a healthy competitive spirit that continues to drive both individual success and strengthen the entire organization.
Further learning
“To be successful and push myself further, education was key.”
Bob Beaulieu was an early leader who gave Ceddric lasting advice about the importance of continued learning. While it may sound cliché, Bob had a sharp ability to recognize his team’s strengths and limitations and knew exactly what Ceddric needed to grow. Though it took longer than expected, completing certification and college became a major milestone that Ceddric credits to Bob’s coaching. Years later, Ceddric reached out to thank Bob for the lasting impact of that conversation.

Becoming a leader
People over process
“It’s about building morale, building teamwork, and establishing a solid network of friends in the workplace that could later be advocates.”
While education was vital, Ceddric learned from Joe Farrell that leadership requires more than knowledge — it’s about people. Joe, an enthusiastic visionary, often said, “People over process,” reminding Ceddric that it is the people that make the business. This people-first philosophy deeply influenced Ceddric, who continues to build meaningful connections and prioritize team spirit in his own leadership.
The best policy
“People tend to appreciate when you are honest and sincere with commendation as well as counsel.”
Then there was Valerie Whitelaw, a colleague who taught him a crucial lesson about honesty — that being direct and sincere doesn’t have to be harsh or insensitive. He admits that there are several moments in his career where he should have been more discerning. This insight highlights the delicate balance leaders must strike between transparency and empathy, a skill Ceddric continues to refine. Knowing the full scope of his decision making and how it affects people in the long run was a hard lesson to learn.
Overcoming obstacles
“Every opportunity is not going to be in pretty gift wrapping, but it should be viewed as an opportunity to grow in your experience, knowledge, and network.”
Facing a major crossroads when his job relocated to another state, Ceddric reflected on advice from Vice President Dahna Hull, who consistently emphasized the importance of saying YES enthusiastically whenever an opportunity arises. This mindset encouraged him to embrace change, underscoring the importance of adaptability and positivity in career progression.

After more than 25 years in his career, Ceddric often reflects on the people who guided him through major decisions and set him on the right path. He actively reconnects with them, saying, “These individuals hold a special place in my story because when I face crossroads, they’re the trusted voices I turn to for guidance.” He deeply values these connections, recognizing that challenges and setbacks have also provided valuable lessons contributing to his growth.
Reconnecting with those who made a difference is more than nostalgia; it serves as a reminder that career growth is deeply influenced by the people who challenge, support, and guide us. Ceddric’s story shows that the lessons learned from mentors, colleagues, and leaders become invaluable tools for growth, not just professionally but personally, too. In the end, the people we encounter along the way are integral to the journey itself, shaping who we become and how we lead.
