We sat down with Dr. Prashant Ramappa, Lead Data Scientist, and Prerana Bahirat, Sr. Associate – Data & AI Engineering, to talk tech careers and what it’s like working at AT&T.
What advice do you have for those looking to begin their tech career?
Prashant: Like most things, a strong foundation is key. Gain the knowledge and hands-on experience required of your desired path. You can do this by taking a practical road through internships, part-time work, or even personal projects to get that experience. You also want to build a strong network. Industry events and online communities can be helpful here. Additionally, you should showcase your work. Create a portfolio or contribute to open-source projects to demonstrate your talents.
Prerana: That is great advice. I would also add that it’s important to find your passion. Understand what aspects of tech truly excite you and go after that. It’s also important to step out of your comfort zone. Growth happens when you challenge yourself.
How did you turn your passion for technology into a career?
Prerana: Staying curious and adaptable has been essential to finding a fulfilling career. Connect with your peers and mentors to learn about new opportunities. Regularly research new areas within your field to find ones that align your passions with your career goals. By continuing to explore, you’ll find a role that reflects your interests.
Prashant: There are four keys to pursuing your passion in your work. First, find common ground. Look for areas where your passions and tech intersect. Second, pursue personal projects and work on tasks that excite you. Third, connect with professionals who share your passions. Finally, stay open minded and be flexible in exploring new roles and industries.
What skills have been most essential to you in building your career?
Prerana: For me, it all starts with enthusiasm for my work. Being genuinely interested in tech and staying up to date with the latest advancements is crucial. This enthusiasm drives you to learn continuously. Patience has also been very important. Problem-solving is a big part of the job and requires a lot of time and often multiple attempts. Team spirit is also a great skill to have. Our projects are typically collaborative and being able to work with others, communicate effectively, and value everyone’s contributions is important.
Prashant: I agree. Problem solving and continuous learning are core to technology work. Technical proficiency as well. Mastering various programming languages, cloud technologies, and understanding algorithms is very significant.
What are some of your most important lessons learned at AT&T?
Prashant: One of my biggest takeaways working at AT&T is the need to be flexible in learning and adapting to new technologies. Continuous education is essential in the fast-paced tech world. It’s also important to keep the customer in mind. Prioritizing customers’ needs leads to better solutions.
Prerana: Working at a company like AT&T, you have access to so many great colleagues. Everyone has unique insights and experiences. Being open to learning from everyone can enrich your knowledge. In a team-focused environment like this, it’s always good to take a team first approach. Prioritizing your team’s success leads to better outcomes. Lastly, I’d like to call out how important maintaining a healthy work-life balance is to long-term success and wellbeing.
