Whether you’re refreshing your look for the new year or trying to start a new job on the right foot, we could all use a little help filling our professional closet. Luckily, our team members have enough style to spare and they’re here to help you put together work attire that is #OOTD-worthy.

Check out these do’s and don’t’s of dressing for success. Let’s get things started with…

What NOT to wear

This team certainly has a lot of personality, but their work attire leaves much to be desired.  A walk down the runway will give you get a better idea of what clothes to leave at home.

Forget the sweats

Sweatpants, track pants, and leggings are great for hitting the gym, but not the office. The same goes for sleeveless shirts and hoodies.

Outfits like the ones below are the first you can take off your list if you want to make a good first impression on your bosses and coworkers.

Impress don’t distress

Another item to leave in the drawer is your ripped jeans. Intentional or not, clothing that appears to have seen better days shouldn’t see the office. Baggy or ill-fitting pants and shirts fit into this category as well. Distressed may be a fashion statement, but it’s a statement better made off the clock.

Over the top, better stop

You’ll also want to avoid loud and informal clothing choices. We all love to support our favorite teams, but jerseys are are another one for the “Don’t” list. Same goes for graphic tees and similar pieces of clothing. When dressing for the office, it’s best to keep things simple and clean.

Outfits like the examples below are big on personality, but come up short for professionalism.

What to wear

That’s what we call dressing to impress. These team members are demonstrating that being professional doesn’t mean leaving your style at home. Take a closer look for some fit-spiration.

When in doubt, rep the brand

A good starting point for a work outfit is something branded. AT&T has plenty of apparel for team members and most of it is designed specifically for going to work. If you’re ever not sure of what to wear, it’s never a bad idea to reach for that company polo or pull over.

Note from the examples below that even jeans can be acceptable office wear provided the rest of your outfit is clean and professional.

Play the hits

They say a classic never goes out of style, and that’s definitely true when it comes to dressing for the workplace. Button downs, blouses, sweaters, slacks, and dress shoes have been office staples for decades. Try combining different colors and simple patterns to bring your personality to these basics.

Remember, keep it simple, presentable, and professional.

Even more fit-spiration

The basics mastered, you can really let your fashion flag fly. Add a skirt to your repertoire. Add a layer to really bring an ensemble to life. When you look in the mirror before work, ask yourself “Can I imagine my boss wearing this?” If not, it may be to go back to drawing board.
