We’ve all heard at one time or another that “we’re only as strong as our network.” Phrases like that can make networking seem daunting — but it doesn’t have to be.
Building a strong, supportive network can be as simple as being yourself and putting yourself in the right situations. We spoke with leaders from across #LifeAtATT and got their insights on how to make meaningful connections in the workplace.
There is no doubt about it, networking is critical when it comes to personal fulfillment and professional success. The right people in our corner as advocates, supporters, and friends can make all the difference as we build and grow our careers.
Starting small
There isn’t one “right” way to build a network. Whether it be through shared interests, similar background, or someone you aspire to be more like, everyone is valuable in your network. These are the people who will make you feel seen, valued, and will champion you as you continue on your personal and professional journeys.
Where should you look? You don’t have to go far to start. Building connections within your own team is a great way to grow your network. As the people you spend most of your time collaborating with, they understand exactly what you bring to the table and can be great references when looking to make a career move.
Expanding your reach
Beyond the people you interact with day-to-day, there are numerous resources at AT&T to further extend your network. One way to do it is with networking events hosted by various business units or employee groups. These events offer insights into fields you may not be familiar with as well as the cultures of co-workers. You will not only become more knowledgable, but you might even discover a new career goal or passion.
Some strong conversation starters to get the ball rolling:
- What does a day in your life look like?
- How do you define balance?
- What was your favorite role you’ve held?
Another path is taking advantage of our rich mentorship opportunities. Many of our employee groups offer mentoring circles that connect team members with leaders from all across the company. We also have an internal site that helps facilitate connections between potential mentors and mentees.
I connected with a diverse group of leaders, each of whom graciously shared their inspiring stories and learnings with me. I saw every lesson as an integral piece of a web I was building, where one point or story connected to the next, making the following connection that much stronger.
A two-way street
It’s important to remember that networking is as much about “what can I do for you” as it is “what can you do for me.” A strong network is one where everybody supports each other. Don’t just wait for someone to give you an opportunity, be on the lookout for opportunities to elevate others as well.
Build a network of people around you who demonstrate trust, respect, and accountability. Who are aware of your goals and aspirations. You never know when they may have an opportunity to cheerlead your name in a conversation you may not be part of.
With a strong support system, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish. So get out there, be yourself, and pay it forward. In no time at all you’ll see firsthand how Connecting Changes Everything.
