AT&T’s Employee Groups are some of our most engaged employees and they often participate in mentoring; whether it’s 1:1 mentoring or group mentoring. Employee Groups are already a natural way for people of similar backgrounds and interests to connect.

Sarah Wesley, a member of our dedicated Diversity, Equity & Inclusion team and an EG member, shares why it’s so valuable for new members of #LifeAtATT to find a mentor and connect early.

The First Step to Successful Mentorship

Building a mentor-mentee connection is often easier said than done. Working with a mentor at an appropriate level is often one of the challenges employees face.

AT&T defines a mentor as a leader who focuses on the professional development of a mentee; willing to give support, provide feedback and guidance. The mentoring relationship typically focuses on the leaders’ area of expertise where the mentor can advise on the topic and how to navigate the business.

“We guide employees to focus on building mentor connections with leaders a level or two higher so the mentor can share their own experiences and provide career insights,” Sarah said.

“The mentor and mentee connect regularly to set the objectives of the engagement and determine logistics and timing. Most times the connection is about the mentor advising the mentee on how to strengthen a specific skillset. Other times it’s simply about building relationships and sharing experiences.”

Long-term Benefits of Successful Mentorship

Mentorship is important because it helps people realize their potential allowing them to reach their goals more quickly. As a successful mentoring relationship evolves, a mentor can often speak up for their mentee and vouch for their career movement or advancement. They can open doors, identify opportunities for growth and development, and look out for the mentee’s broader interests.
