Growing up, I had countless dreams about what I wanted to become in the future. I imagined myself as a lawyer, teacher, doctor, or reporter. Despite these varied aspirations, one thing stayed the same: my passion for helping people. My parents’ constant encouragement to stay curious and keep learning became the foundation of my journey. I was often reminded by them that education is a treasure no one can take away from me. Fueled by a deep belief in the power of education, I pursued my studies with determination and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.
Attending an HBCU was the best decision I ever made. It profoundly deepened my appreciation for Black history and culture, instilled a sense of pride, and motivated me to embrace new opportunities. My HBCU provided me with invaluable development experiences, including hands-on work in a fully-equipped TV studio where I excelled as both a journalist and a news director. The continuous support from my professors and peers, coupled with an inclusive and empowering environment, enabled me to build strong relationships and networks that have been pivotal in my career.
Balancing my passions
My professional journey began with internships in the pharmaceutical industry, where I first delved into corporate communications. This initial step into the corporate world was not only eye-opening but also deeply fulfilling, as I was contributing to meaningful change every day. These experiences revealed two major career passions: corporate communications and journalism with video production. For a long time, I believed I would have to choose between the two.
It was my role as a Corporate Communications Intern at AT&T that truly resonated with both of my aspirations, where I learned that I could have it all. I was attracted to AT&T because of its commitment to inclusivity, continuous learning, and its support for HBCUs. I had always wanted to work for a tech company, and AT&T provided the perfect environment for me to grow and thrive this summer.
Embracing diversity and growth
Since joining AT&T, I’ve experienced a culture that values diversity and inclusivity. The support I’ve received has been phenomenal, allowing me to learn and achieve things I never thought possible. From writing for a global audience to interviewing the Chief of Staff of Finance, my time here has been filled with opportunities to act boldly and be creative.
Over the course of my internship, I had opportunities to collaborate with other organizations across the company that allowed me to pursue my passions in exciting ways. I really enjoyed sharing my ideas for projects and being back in a studio atmosphere doing what I love.
I proposed creating an intern-focused video for our company news program highlighting their diverse talents and stories. Not only did the team embrace the concept, but I also had the incredible opportunity to star in the episode. This showcased how much AT&T values employee ideas, and it allowed me to share my passion for storytelling with a wider audience.
Working with the Corporate Social Responsibility team to help bridge the digital divide has been incredibly fulfilling, too. Contributing to initiatives that provide underserved communities with access to technology has reinforced my belief in the power of connectivity and the importance of giving back. This experience has not only enhanced my professional skills but also deepened my commitment to making a positive impact in the world.
Making Dreams Reality
Reflecting on my time at school and at AT&T, I realize how instrumental both experiences have been in shaping who I am today. The lessons learned at my HBCU have set me on a path to success. With AT&T, my passions for communications and production can flourish together. The opportunities to grow and make a difference have been beyond what I could have imagined. As I continue this journey, I am inspired by the belief that with determination, support and a commitment to lifelong learning, dreams truly can become reality.
